Editor's Note: A few months ago, Brobee_Baby_Brother asked the question in the forums, "Would you be interested in a crochet Brobee hat pattern?" and the response was unbelievable! She got a huge positive response!

For those of us who crochet, we know how incredibly tedious and difficult it is to write a pattern. So we are extremely grateful to Brobee_Baby_Brother who has given us this awesome free pattern! Thank you!

Sorry for the delay! I was without computer for months! ARGH!

In writing this pattern I assume anyone following it will have a basic knowledge of crochet. This is done in the Amigurumi style where rounds are not joined and you work in a continuous circle. You may need a round marker. Google amigurumi for more in-depth instruction, and you may need to google sc in post st if you don't know what that means.

This pattern is my first one, I designed it. Please don’t post it as your own design, but you have my permission to mass produce it, copy the pattern and so on. I’m sure the Gabba rules are that you can’t sell it as a “Brobee” hat, but creative marketing may save you I don't want to risk it. The pattern is free because it’s licensed merchandise and I don’t know the rules, but I’m pretty sure if I charged for it, the Gabba police would get me, LOL. I’d like to keep my art legal. I designed it for fun and personal use.

MATERIALS: I used Caron Super Soft in what I called a Brobee Green for the main hat. The horns were made using leftover red yarn, eyes were white, black for the accents and eyebrow, all worsted weight yarns. Small amount of scrap yarn or fiberfill for the horns, and a tapestry or yarn needle to sew parts on. H hook or size needed for gauge.

Gauge is unimportant for the hat, as it will vary with the head sizes anyhow. My particular gauge was 5 sts per inch, with an H hook.

Sts used: sc

Begin with the Green, chain 3, sl st in 1st ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, 5sc in ring (6sc).

Rounds 2-15: increase by 6 at random to continue the circle. Do not join rounds. (I ended up with 83 sts somehow, which means I screwed up my own pattern, but the size of the circle should be large enough to fit over the top of your tot’s head.)

Rounds 15-end: sc in ea st around. (this is the body of the thing, go for as long as needed to cover the sides of your tot’s head) approx 4-6”

EARFLAPS:
When you reach the side length required, without finishing off, you’re going to turn your work and ch 1, sc 10, decreasing one st per row until there is one stitch left. Then chain 50 (more or less, just keep ‘em even!) and FO.

Fold the hat in half to determine the second earflap’s location, and work same as the first earflap.

HORNS: Make 3

With the red, chain 17, join to form a large loop, DO NOT TWIST. SC in ea ch around.

Rnd 2-6: decrease randomly 5 times, tie off and stitch together last stitches to form a point. I tucked the tail into the horn, and stuffed it w/fiberfill

EYES:
Begin with white, and continue for only three rounds. Like the body of the hat, I started out with the ring, and increased by six, each round, but clustered the increases on either side to form an oval shape. (rnd 1: 6sc in ring. Rnd 2: 3sc in 1st sc, sc in nxt 2, 3sc in nxt sc, sc nxt 2. Rnd 3: 3sc in 1st sc, sc nxt 5, 3sc in nxt sc, sc last sts, join w/sl st, FO)

MOUTH:

With the red, ch 16. Sc in each stitch across, 3 sc in last st, continue on the post side of the chain and sc across for the last sts, end with 3 sc in first stitch.

Assembly:

Arrange the horns on the top of the head, spacing them as evenly as you can. Sew them in place using the red yarn.

Next, using a straight stitch or any stitch that would work, simply embroider an eyebrow in the black. If I were going to fix anything on my original it would be the placement of the eyebrow and eyes, further down and closer to the front of the hat (maybe 2 inches or more- away from the horns)

Next position the eyes in place, I used a small amount of fiberfill here to puff the eyes a little. Sew the eyes to the body w/black, using any stitch that will give the eye a clear outline. I used a blanket stitch (google it). Use a satin stitch or any other stitch that will work to place the pupils.

Using black thread, I sewed the mouth on, shaping as I went to achieve the smile. I reinforced the shaping with the red yarn and stitched the mouth around the edges. (I may have over-reinforced it, you may take your liberties)

I am happy to answer questions and apologize for my delay in posting the pattern. It’s pretty free-form, but if you run into trouble I will do my best to help out.

You can work the eyebrow the same as the mouth if you felt up to it. I might make it longer or shorter than the mouth to get it to look right, but it's an option that can make the 'brow look more fuzzy (and novelty yarn would look awesome if you had some!)

"My kids [Stella, 22 months, and Liam, 3] are obsessed with Yo Gabba Gabba! It's a dream to guest on the show and do a dance-y dance!"

-Tori Spelling, actress

"I love YO GABBA GABBA. I don't care what you say, DJ Lance, Muno, Brobee, Foofa, Toodee and Plex have taught my daughter many valuable lessons--like the desirability of napping, for one. Not to throw objects at Daddy's skull. Not biting. The value of 'trying again' and 'not giving up.' All set to surprisingly weird, offbeat songs which--in another venue and with other lyrics, one might find oneself enjoying at a club. They get good indie bands as guests, and Mark Mothersbaugh of DEVO is a regular. I know every song and every lyric by heart."

-Anthony Bourdain, host of No Reservations
